Since 2000, Northgate Baptist Church in Edmonton, Alberta has become increasingly passionate about the people of Uganda. We started by learning of conditions of children in Northern Uganda where a group called the Lord’s Resistance Army was abducting children as soldiers and slaves. Our church began supporting training events and projects in Uganda. Meanwhile, more and more East African people were showing up in our services – some from Uganda. These connections both in Edmonton and in Uganda were a clear indication that God wanted us to focus more on this relationship.
In September of 2009, a small team was commissioned to explore the possibility of a relationship with a community in Uganda through FH Canada. They met with community leaders in an area of Uganda that had no program as yet, another that had started a few years ago through another Canadian church and yet another community where FH Canada had fulfilled their mandate. Seeing the transition and the transformational impact that a relational partnership could have on a community, we were convinced that God had led us to commit ourselves to the families of Marere.
As a congregation of around 400 members, we are excited to embark on this adventure of serving alongside our new friends in Uganda.
