What good is a plot of land? Quite a lot, actually, but it depends on what you make of it.

Aberash, a mother living in Sasiga, Ethiopia, had minimal income and little work; her family struggled to find enough food to eat. Everything changed when Aberash joined a Farmer Co-Operative group and learned how to grow vegetables to feed her family.

But that's not all! She also learned skills in areas of finances, leadership and business development. Aberash learned how to manage the surplus crops so that she could sell them at the local market and generate an income.

“I am very happy of the training I took on vegetables production,” she says. “We do not know the importance of vegetables before the project trained us. I planted it at my backyard and produced a lot. I sold the leftover produce and bought some goats with the money. The goats have reproduced - now I have five! They will generate enough income for me to buy an ox in the future.”

A Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) rep from the Canadian Embassy in Ethiopia paid a visit to our projects in the Sasiga community. Check out what they had to say:

"My heartfelt thanks for organizing the visit to Sasiga between April 6-9. The visit helped established an understanding of what FH is doing in facilitating improvement of overall socio-economic well-being of the communities in that area, through different horticultural and fruit production interventions, protection of the environment, income generation for women, and water and sanitation projects.

I have observed that FH’s relationship with the communities and local administration is based on trust, mutual understanding and respect which I believe is contributing to achieving its objectives. The enthusiasm and motivation that I saw in members of the community I talked to, shows their belief in the overall goal of the project and activities which I witnessed have started to bear fruit.

I would also like to take this opportunity to commend the team spirit and dedication of the (FH) Sasiga and Addis staff.
