Mighty moms to the rescue!
When something is wrong, mama knows best! That's why FH is empowering moms around the world. "Leader Mothers" are taught lessons on health and sanitation; each Leader Mother then commits to teach these lessons to at least 10 additional mothers in their community. These Leader Mothers are respected in their communities – and families are becoming healthier than ever!
Jean is a Leader Mother in Siloe, Haiti. After the 2010 earthquake, FH taught her how to make a “Tippy Tap,” a hand-washing station made with string and a plastic bottle filled with water and chloride tablets. Now her family uses the device to kill bacteria on their hands to prevent cholera. Jean has taught her neighbours and extended family to do the same. With her family now in good health, Jean has started a small shop in her house to earn a living.
In early February, Food for the Hungry (FH) Canada sent a container of life-saving medical equipment to Hope Hospital in Port-au-Prince. This equipment will allow the hospital to enhance its role as a leading health care provider in Haiti’s capital city. The shipment contains X-ray and ultrasound equipment, anesthesia machines, an operating room table, a sterilization system, water filtration systems, rehab equipment and a host of other equipment and supplies.
Hope Hospital recently underwent a major renovation last Fall, including the completion of a second operating room, an intensive care ward and a new emergency ward. FH’s medical equipment program played a major role in the final phase.
Approximately 50 people work at Hope Hospital, including: 3-4 doctors, 2 pharmacists, orderlies/housekeeping staff, 20-25 nurses, 3 kitchen staff plus 3 in records and administration. Hope Hospital provides health care to approximately 10,000 persons each year, including everything from vaccinations to surgical procedures. The primary focus is to care for orphans, abandoned children, and children whose families are unable to care for them.
We are so excited to be partnering with such a wonderful hospital! Thanks to all who helped fund this container!!
