Anlong Veng, Cambodia

Cambodia's History
The South East Asian country continues to address horrific legacies of past military rule and the Khmer Rouge wars. The Khmer Rouge traumatized Cambodia with genocide, violence and authoritarian rule from the 1960s to the 1990s. At least 1.5 million Cambodians died from execution, forced hardships, or starvation during the Khmer Rouge.

The now reconciled country still feels the effects of a disabled agricultural system, lack of infrastructure, and general fear amongst the population. These realities are manifested in the lives of children orphaned by war, maimed by landmines, and lacking basic education and health services. The rural landscape of Cambodia is covered with rice paddies and the traditional forested regions have been mostly destroyed by farming and war, leaving the soil in poor condition. The area is prone to both drought and flooding.

For Cambodian communities to overcome these difficulties, they need the chance to develop holistically through agriculture recovery, health and education resource development, community co-operation and capacity building and, most importantly, a brighter future secured for their children.

The Poverty Revolution In Cambodia
FH Canada assists Cambodian communities in developing these opportunities through our Model Villages and Child Development Programs. These programs focus on building local capacity and providing the necessary training (i.e. improved agriculture and the importance of education for children) to promote healthy and sustainable development.

What We Do
  • Care for Kids: Children are innocent victims of poverty and often the first to suffer from lack of food, clean water and healthy sanitation. At Food for the Hungry we believe we have a special calling to care for them. FH’s Child Development Program is designed to benefit the entire community: it works together with parents and community leaders to ensure that all children receive hope for their future. Your support of this project allows FH staff to provide access to food, education, medical care and clothing to needy children.
  • Community Agriculture, Sanitation and Savings Education: The principal goal of this project is to increase community members’ food security through improved farming productivity, to increase household health through improved nutritional, hygiene, and disease prevention behaviours and to increase the security of women and children through increased savings & access to affordable credit. 70% of this project’s beneficiaries are women as the Anlong Veng District has the lowest percentage of male headed households.

Quick Facts (from UNICEF, CIA)

  • Only 65% of children attend primary school.
  • 45% of children under five are underweight.
  • Over 70 % of the rural population in Cambodia does not have adequate access to drinkable water.
  • Excess mortality rates among children and adults are heightened due to the prevalence of AIDS.
  • Young men are being exploited for manual labour through human trafficking.
